Athena wreck

Athena (1868-1912) The Athena was a wooden 3 masted sailing barque built by the Middle Dock Company, South Shields, Newcastle on Tyne in 1868 for the Black Diamond Line. It was registered to Australian owners in 1872, and was later converted to a coal hulk in 1896 for McIlwraith and McEarchern. It was a coal hulk in Albany between 1896 and 1912, when it was partly destroyed by a fire. Being no longer fit for use, in March 1912 Athena was towed outside the harbour and burnt off Gull Rock. Wreckage believed to be from the Athena was found west of Herald Bay in 1990.
