Common name: Bilby

Bilbies were once widespread across semi-arid and arid Australia but are now reduced to scattered populations in arid parts. They are listed as Vulnerable. During the day bilbies shelter in long deep burrows which they dig. At night bilbies will venture out of their day-time burrows after twilight to feed. They are omnivorous and feed on arthropods, tubers, plant seeds and fungi by digging holes in the soil. Bilbies are solitary animals and can breed all year round if conditions are favourable.
