(a) FLAG (b) SASH
CH1980.79.a-b
(a) FLAG,yellow silk with royal blue printing. Family tradition attributes flag to late 17th C. - the period of the Battle of the Boyne. However motifs printed on flag read 'THE GLORIOUS AND IMMORTAL MEMORY OF 1688 & 1690' (dates of the 'bloodless revolution' and accession of William of Orange and the Battle of the Boyne). Form of letters and fact that motifs are printed rather than emroidered or woven suggests date from at least mid 19th C. onwards. Motifs in corners are the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland and the Irish harp, crowned and with 'NO SURRENDER'. May date from the period of Parnell and Home Rule agitation c. 1880s - 90s or latter with the establishment of the Irish Free State 1921?
