CORK PRESS

H1992.25

Silvered metal cork press with three legs which are bolted to a workbench; a top section, attached by a hinge at one end, is decorated and has a handle. Between the jaws are three round, fluted recesses of different diameters for different sized corks. Made around 1900 and used until the late 1950's when screw-cap bottles were used. Corks "softened" by squeezing in the press more easily fitted in bottle necks. Was part of equipment in the Como pharmacy bought by Watson in 1963 (see details in subfiles, and H92.0024)
