SAKE CUPS

H1989.815.a-f

Five sake cups representing five styles of pottery made in Hyogo Prefecture. a. Rough glazed, octagonal outside but rounded on inside. Dark brown with green/cream coloured speckling on two opposite sides. Base and foot are unglazed and bear the maker's mark. b. Light brown crackle glaze cup with darker brown to green splashes - one over body of a single fish motif and another 3cm to the left of this. The stylised fish is etched on the ceramic. One side of the cup and the foot are unglazed and there is an orange tint at edges of glaze. Manufacturer's seal and Japanese characters are on base. c. Light green cup, darker in colour towards the rim, with daisy-like flower and two leaves. Cup has a smooth texture and an all-over glaze. Maker's mark is very faint on base. d. Fine, white ceramic cup with motif - probably a flower and definitely leaves - etched into the surface. Japanese characters on base. No definite, shaped foot. e. Light grey cup with thickly raised glaze below rim merging from crimson rings through purple streaks and veining to lavender as the glaze runs down the cup both inside and out. The surface is smooth and there is a maker's seal on the glazed base. The cup has straight straight sides narrowing towards the base with no shaped foot. f. Wooden box to hold sake cups has five square compartments and a lift off lid with Japanese characters. There are two vents centrally placed on each of the two longest sides. This item, together with a number of other articles, was presented to the W.A. Government following the Sister State agreement between it and the Hyogo State Prefecture on 23 June 1981. The original Hyogo exhibition, set up in mid June in the Allendale Square, was essentially a trade exhibition but Sir Charles Court, the Premier of Western Australia, assured Governor Tokitada Sakai of Japan's Hyogo Prefecture that the exhibits would be used to set up a permanent display, a memento of the Sister State relationship. A part of the Beaufort Street Gallery was set aside for this purpose and the items remained there from 1981 until refurbishing of museum areas in 1989.
