VASE

H1989.810

Bottle-shaped vase with bulging body and tapered neck is grey in colour with darker pin-point specks. Around the circumference of the vase, a brown line has been painted; above this, there is a scene with three small boats and three structures, one probably a lighthouse, another, a wayside shrine. Mountains form the background. The lower half of the vase has been divided into six sections with alternating designs of a single flower, and a floral motif within bands of lattice framework. These painted designs are in colours of russet brown and peacock green. The grey colouring of the vase stops short of the foot, nevertheless, the clay foot is clear glazed. Inside, the vase is lighter grey and crackle glazed. There are Japanese characters etched on the base. This item, together with a number of other articles, was presented to the W.A.government following the Sister State agreement between it and the Hyogo State Prefecture on 23 June 1981. The original Hyogo exhibition, set up in mid June in the Allendale Square, was essentially a trade exhibition but Sir Charles Court, the Premier of Western Australia, assured Governor Tokitada Sakai of Japan's Hyogo Prefecture that the exhibits would be used to set up a permanent display, a memento of the Sister State relationship. A part of the Beaufort Street Gallery was set aside for this purpose and the items remained there from 1981 until refurbishing of museum areas in 1989.
