TEAPOT STAND. Made from a piece of the SMS Emden

H1990.47

Square wooden teapot stand with a flat base and rounded corners. Recessed into the centre of the upper face is a round metal disc and across one corner a rectangular brass(?) plate has been attached reading "HMAS SYDNEY / DESTROYED EMDEN 1914". A stoker on the HMAS Sydney, Jim Sullivan, fashioned the stand out of a piece of the German cruiser, the EMDEN after it had been sunk by the SYDNEY in 1914. Sullivan was a regular visitor at the home of Charles Taylor, the port chaplain in Fremantle between 1930 and 1938, and he gave the stand to Taylor. Taylor was said to have been the "first official chaplain in Fremantle"(West Australian 11 October 1978). The stand was passed on to his son For family details see H89.1071
