Depicts crowd scene in front of Palace Chambers, in Maritana Street. Length of rail is laid, and Lord Hopetoun is pictured driving the first spike in. The British flag waves above; there are smaller, unidentified flags hung on same length of rope. There are people crowded all around the scene, and on the balcony of Palace Chambers. On back has "B. Stein & Co., Booksellers etc., Kalgoorlie W.A. / Photo by Dwyer. Printed in Germany".
