Axinella NG3

Light orange to red colour alive. Stalked fan, cup or branches with short thick stalk. < 1mm “stellate” oscules dense over one surface, faint patterning from underlying skeleton on other surface, microscopically porous. Both surfaces smooth. Fan is soft compressible, springy, stalk is incompressible. Characterised by only having oxeas, occasionally styles, no microscleres.

Morphology

Erect stalked cup, fan or branching sponge, morphology variable but oscules usually, but not exclusively, stellate.

Behaviour

Sessile filter feeder.

Method of reproduction

Sexual with larvae.

Habitat

Marine

WA: 3-123.0 metres.

Distribution

Widespread WA from southwest near Augusta to Cape Leveque in southern Kimberley.
