BONNET, white

CH1970.75

not recorded
Addition 8.8.1990:
Ayrshire work bonnet with medallion shaped back. The embroidery is satin stitch (the thick bits) and stem stitch (the narrow bits). The lace around the edge of the bonnet is handmade. The ribbon decoration on the top of the bonnet is handmade. The ribbon decoration on the top of the bonnet is probably satin ribbon. Both the embroidery thread and the muslin are of a fine quality which is no longer available. It was possible to buy the fabric that the bonnet is made from by the yard, already embroidered. The medallion shaped back could also be purchased ready made.
The bonnet is handsewn and hand embroidered. It could have been made up by the nurse who was looking after the child. It is very decorative and could have been a christening bonnet. Information from Thyra Robertson and Judith Penell of the Embroiderers' Guild.
