In the morning we had the Southland, the north point N:E: and the second point east by South, the third point E:S:E: 5 to 6 miles from us; plumbing at 75 or 80 fathoms found red sand with small pebbles, shells and coral; the weather very calm, allowed ourselves to drift but there was a swell. In the afternoon we could just make out the land through the mist. At 95 fathoms fine white sand with little shells and little red pebbles; set our course N:. Did not make headway during these 24 hours because of being becalmed and tacking up and down. In the evening we had the land 7 miles N:N:E: of us; at 90 fathoms white sand. Drifted east in the first hour of the dogwatch, the Southland at the southern latitude of 32 degrees 50 minutes northwesterly 8 degrees 48 minutes according to two sightings that land lying to the north and it is beautiful table-land; in the foreground lie low dunes and heavy surf rolls towards the shore.

In the morning we had the same land's south point E:S:E:, the north point N:E: and east 8 miles from the shore; we were then out of reach of land because of calm with fine weather. Found ourselves to be 8 degrees and 48 minutes northwest. In the morning we had a light breeze from the S:W:. Set our course northeast to in order to reach the shore. At noon we found that we were as much as 50 minutes more southerly than I had estimated because we had been sailing north all the time and had gained 30 minutes south. We found then than the current must run directly south against the shore for the winds are mostly southerly and very strong from the S:W:. At midday we had the south point of the Southland S:E: to E: from us and the northernmost one E: 1/2 N: at 100 fathoms, white sand. The surf is so terrible here that our hair stood on end. We found two small islands here close to the shore but very low. Set our course N: to: W: In the evening we had the northernmost land that we could see N:N:E: 8 to 9 miles from us; the wind S:S:W: light breeze fine weather.
