CAMERA, with plates and case

H1993.181.a-f

A. Brown leather carry case with fold back lid and top carry handle. Buckled straps and front lock fastener, key missing. Traces of a paper label on top but details indecipherable.
B. Plate camera of timber construction with brass fittings. Brass label reads 'THE / TROPICAL / VICTO / H. LTD / LONDON'. Inlaid white circle label reads 'TIME & INST. / PATENT / THORNTON / PICKARD' Inlaid white circle label on wooden case reads 'BRITISH / ENSIGN / (logo 'N' on shield suspended from a pole) / TRADEMARK / MADE'. Cursory research has established that the camera was made by Houghton Ltd. formerly Houghton & Claudet (1834), George Houghton & Son (1867) George Houghton & Sons (1892) and Houghtons Ltd in 1904. Have found no reference to this particular model. The 'Ensign' involvement is uncertain at this point. McKeown says that Ensign did not become involved with Houghtons until the 1930's but Coe features Ensign camera marketed by Houghtons in the very early 1900s. The label referring to Thornton Pickard relates to the shutter for which the company was famous. This one being the Thornton-Pickard Time & Instantaneous Shutter of 1892. The camera must have been manufactured in England, not imported.
C. Lens cover, round, leather, lined with dark blue/black velvet.
D, E, & F. Photographic plate holders, timber and brass. All marked '1' on one side and '2' on the other.
D. is otherwise unmarked,
E. is marked '(al)TRINCHAM / THORNTON / PICKARD / ENGLAND' F. is marked 'THORNTON / PICKARD'
