CLINOMETER

H1992.131

Turkish artillery clinometer. The instrument is used to calculate the "fall of shot", by being placed on the barrel to determine the angle of the barrel, and thus the distance a projectile will travel with a given charge of powder. This clinometer was probably a war souvenir of the Gallipoli or Palestine campaigns of 1915-1918 as many West Australians served there. All markings and graduations are in Turko-Arabic script which was modernised to Romanised letters by Mustapha Kemal Attaturk in 1923. Serial No. .......... Proof Marks ....................
