Travelling puppet theatre which packs into a suitcase. Made by Miss Rogers and based on instructions in The Mechanic, a book published in 1947. The middle spread is six pages of instructions on how to build a portable puppet stage. Stage consists of 7 pieces. The top and bottom of the case are separate; top becomes base of stage with handle at rear, bottom becomes back wall of stage if using marionettes or roof of stage if using hand puppets. The inside of both panels is painted green. The front of the stage consists of 2 pieces of yellow painted wood, bolted at each side and at centre, from which the curtain hangs. There are 2 sets of wings, one green with curtain rail, the other yellow. They can either be used together or separately. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
