KATA TEMPERATURE READING KIT

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. Works on principle developed in South African mines. The thermometer is heated in hot water to a certain temperature, is removed from heat and the time it takes for the temperature to drop is recorded; this reflects the underground atmosphere allowing it to be monitored. Wooden box with leather strap contains large thermometer and metal flask with rubber stopper. Bulb of thermometer has fabric shield covering it. The box has special apertures for both thermometer and flask. Inscribed on thermometer is: "No 1654 J. Hicks 89 10 Hatton Garden London F/451 / KATA Rd No 447410 / Mean 36.5 [degrees]" The mercury or measuring liquid is purple. Hot water flask has no maker's marks.
