The first well drilled in Australia was in Albany Harbour, WA in 1907. A joint venture between Caltex and Ampol resulted in the formation of West Australian Petroleum Pty Ltd (WAPET) in 1952. The WA petroleum industry is the largest contributor to Australia's production of petroleum products with a value of $21.3 billion for the nation’s economy.

Based largely on the development of the reserves of the North West Shelf and other onshore hydrocarbon basins, the industry extracts crude oil, condensate and natural gas from petroleum reservoirs deep beneath the earth's surface. Western Australia will be home to a number of major new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects which are estimated to generate hundreds of billions of dollars in economic growth and government royalties. The Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project constitutes Australia's largest oil and gas resource development and currently account for more than 40% of Australia's oil and gas production, and one of the world's largest LNG producers.
The newest oil and gas fields that are being found and developed in Australia, as well as around the world are increasingly in deep water off the continental shelf. This expansion in oil and gas exploration and the transition from the shallow coastal seabed to deep water often crosses very steep and rugged sections of seabed, which means that pipelines exporting the oil or gas to shore need to find a safe point to cross. Building on this technology base, the offshore oil and gas industry created the work class Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to assist in the development of offshore oil fields, and in particular, deep water drilling support.
