Garypinidae Daday, 1888

Family

Protogarypinus giganteus from Australia (Image: M. Harvey)

The Garypininae were erected by Daday (1888) for the genus Garypinus from southern Europe. It was considered a subfamily of Olpiidae by Chamberlin (1930) and all subsequent workers until Judson (2005) raised the group to family status.

Composition

The family currently contains 21 genera and over 70 species. The majority of species possess strongly divided arolia on the tarsus of all legs, but members of several genera (Neominniza, Oreolpium, Protogarypinus, Teratolpium and Thaumatolpium) lack this feature.

Distribution

Garypinids are found all over the world, and are frequently found under tree bark. Several genera, such as Amblyolpium and Solinus, are widely distributed.
