Numbats were previously widespread before European settlement, now they occupy just a few reserves in the south-west of WA and translocated populations in other parts of Australia. They are listed as Vulnerable. Numbats are diurnal and feed exclusively on termites. They usually forage near shelter such as hollow logs and will retreat to a nest or burrow during the night. Numbats are extremely vulnerable to predation by cats and foxes. Numbats have successfully been bred in captivity at the Perth Zoo.
