Once occurring across most of semi-arid and arid Australia, the Chuditch is now confined to remnant woodlands of the south-west of WA. During the day the rest in hollow logs and come out at night to feed. They are generalist predators, taking a wide range of invertebrates, mammals, birds and reptiles, including parrots and even rabbits. Up to six young are born between May – September and are reared in the females pouch. Chuditch are listed as vulnerable after population declines during the 1980s and controlling foxes and cats is necessary to assist in population recovery.
