a) Metal brace as per R.A. Salaman 'Dict. of Tools', p. 99 and ill. p. 90 fig 144f. Spofford or split-socket pattern brace with metal head and swollen iron handle. The split foot screw is not original - prob. was thumbscrew.
b) Bit with square tang.
Brace is similar to 'Mathieson's All Steel Spofford Fencing Brace' illustrated in Baird's 1939 Catalogue, p. 8.
