Wooden abacus with label still attached. Label says "ONO SOROBAN" on one side (Japanese for abacus); and "No. Y1500 / SIZE 23 X 4 / MADE IN JAPAN" on the other side. It is attached with a piece of yellow cord. The abacus comprises 23 rows of 5 wooden beads. There is a rod extending the width of the abacus which separates the top bead from each row. The beads are a light coloured timber varnished in matt; the frame is dark timber varnished in gloss. It is very neatly made with all fastenings embedded in the timber. The abacus and a number of other objects were given to the Western Australian Government following the Sister State agreement in 1981. They came from the Hyogo Exhibition in Japan. They were displayed in the Beaufort St Gallery for a number of years.
