POSTER - 'WORKERS COMPENSATION (WA)'
H1995.1134
Black background poster with white border. Along top in large white block print is 'They're trying/ to cripple compo'. Underneath in small print in white 'legislation before the State Parliament will destroy Workers/ Compensation as we now know it. Workers in W.A. should be aware that/ under the Act: Maximum payouts will/ drop./ Coverage to and from/ work at lunch or/ other "mid-work" times/ will be dropped./ Proof of fault to be/ shifted from the/ employer to the/ worker./ The 'heart attack'/ clauses which resulted in industrial chaos in Victoria/ will be introduced here. Payments, currently/ for life, will be/ chopped at age 65./ The Industrial Diseases/ section is being changed/ to make it more/ difficult for workers./ Sub-contractors who/ work in teams may/ not be covered at all.'. In middle section of poster is a large photograph, black and white stilletto of man with an amputated leg and crutches for support as he leans against the entrance of a house. The background scenes of a car and house, as well as the crutches are clearly outlined, but the figure itself is caught in the shadows.
Below in small white print. 'The only way this government can be stopped from changing the Act is for enough pressure to be bought to bear to make it electorally unwise for them to do so./ For this reason the Trades and Labor Council urges all workers to take up the campaign/ in the workplace. Obtain pamphlets from your union office, put pressure on employers/ to take out extra insurance coverage and to introduce make-up pay provisions/ guaranteeing that Workers Compensation benefits will not be eroded'.
In larger bold print 'Get on the telephone - call your local M.P./ Organise petitions - write to the premier'. In large capitals 'GET INVOLVED - IN CASE YOU/ GET INJURED'. In small print 'Authorized by P. Cook, Trades and Labor Council, 74 Beaufort Street, Perth, 6000'.
