DRESSING GOWN

H1991.34

This garment was worn by Dame Alexandra Hasluck (b 1908) during the period she was the wife of the Governor General, Sir Paul Hasluck who held office from 1969 to 1974. This kimono-style dressing gown is a reversible garment made from two fabrics sewn together. One side is red from the hem to the bust and sleeve area where a multicoloured floral pattern dominates then changes to cream across the shoulders. The other side has a pale blue background all over with a floral pattern across the bust and sleeves in many colours. Both designs have been printed on the fabric. The construction of the dressing gown is in the classic kimono style of a "T" shape. The underarms of the sleeves are not sewn into the gown and the front opening is finished with a 5.5 cm band which passes from the waistline on one side of the opening around the back neck and down to the waistline on the other side. A separate belt (178cm x 4.3cm) of the same fabrics, again reversible, is worn tied around the waist.
