DRESS, Evening
H1991.33
The dress was worn by Dame Alexandra Hasluck (b 1908) while fulfilling her duties as the wife of the Governor General, Sir Paul Hasluck who held office from 1969 to 1974. Careful note was taken of the garments worn at each function to prevent wearing it at the same place or with the same people. These details were recorded by Dame Alexandra's Lady-in-Waiting, Patricia Pidgeon (nee Dawes) who also maintained an accessory, jewellery and make-up case in readiness for quick changes. This dress was worn on more informal evening functions such as protocol dinners or ordinary dinner engagements. The jewellery worn on these occasions was also more informal; for instance a tiara would not have been acceptable. Predominantly red paisley pattern. Ankle length. Square neckline, defined with separate yoke. Gathered at waist with shirring elastic. Ruffle at knee height, the skirt continues to floor length. Full length sleeves finished with cuff. Waistband tie in the same fabric as dress.
