PORTRAIT of an Aborigine

Inscriptions: Not signed or dated. Subject Matter: Full profile portrait of an aborigine. If his garment is kangaroo skin, it could be from the Perth or South West area. However it could also be an insignificant rug. Headdress of possum skin string with ochre and emu feathers. Denotes that he is a properly initiated man. He probably did have a forehead band but this white patch is not original. Definitely not from the desert region, probably from the South West. Peter Bindon suggests it may be New South Wales. Roe spent time there. [Roe 1979 - 1878] Peter Bindon also suggests that the wood is a drawing board made from North American timber - oregon. Other: The painting has been in the Roe Family for a "long time". However, it is unlikely to be by J.S. Roe because the style is uncharacteristic for Roe and for his period. Hence the date towards the end of the century.
