Unveiled exhibition: WA Museum - Perth

On the eve of Perth Fashion Festival, Culture and the Arts Minister John Day has announced another fashion coup for Perth - Unveiled: 200 years of wedding glamour.

Mr Day said Unveiled: 200 years of wedding glamour would be on display at the Western Australian Museum - Perth from December 8, 2012 and was presented in association with London’s prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).

“Following the British Museum’s Extraordinary Stories, the WA Museum is again exhibiting significant collections alongside our own State collection,” he said.

“Unveiled: 200 years of wedding glamour includes more than 40 wedding outfits from the Victoria and Albert collection, showcasing some of the most glamorous and extravagant wedding outfits from the 1800s to present day.

“The exhibition features wedding dresses created by famous designers such as Vera Wang, John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood, including those worn by celebrities such as Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese.

“A highlight of the exhibition is a Norman Hartnell wedding dress with a 3.6m train. Worn by socialite Margaret Whigham in 1933, the wedding caused London traffic to come to a standstill as people crowded to catch a glimpse of the bride.”

The Minister said Unveiled: 200 years of wedding glamour would present a timeline of wedding fashion and an insight into the social and economic conditions of the times.

“This exhibition traces how the white wedding dress has become so universally popular and goes a long way to explaining why society is so captivated by the wedding phenomenon, particularly celebrity weddings,” he said.
