A Millennium of Cultural Contact

Professor Alistair Paterson, Archaeology Discipline Chair, University of Western Australia
6.00pm, Friday 12 August
NWS Shipping Theatre, WA Museum - Maritime

Join Alistair Paterson for a fascinating overview of a millennium of cultural contact between European societies and those of the rest of the world. Beginning with the Norse intersection with indigenous peoples of Greenland, Prof Paterson uses case studies and regional overviews to describe the various patterns by which European groups influenced, overcame, and were resisted by the populations encountered in  Africa, the Americas, East Asia, Oceania, and Australia. Based largely on the evidence of archaeology, these unique interactions at many specific points of contact reveal the wide variations in exploration, conquest, colonization, avoidance, and resistance at various locations around the globe.

Alistair Paterson will be available on the night to sign copies of A Millenium of Cultural Contact (Left Coast Press, 2011). Museum Shop will have copies available for sale at RRP $49.95 each.
