In 1841 the James Matthews was wrecked in Western Australia. One hundred and thirty two years later, in 1973 the remains of the two masted trading Brig was discovered off Woodmans Point by members of the Underwater Explorers Club. A further twenty eight years would go by before a story would unfold that belied the ship's innocent sounding name. It appeared that the name James Matthews was not her original one. In an earlier life her owners carried a far more sinister cargo!. This is the story of the re-discovery of the ship and dives as carried out by the WA Maritime Museum, showing for the first time the full picture of what happened. |
