WA Museum Boola Bardip recently welcomed the return of REMIX Perth, a sold-out summit in its fifth edition, bringing over 270 creative leaders together to explore the future of culture, technology and the creative economy.

Opening with international summit founders Peter Tullin and Simon Cronshow providing a global overview of emerging trends in creative content and technology, the stage was quickly set for a day of exciting ideas. Sessions included discussions around innovative projects and real-world case studies focused on the evolution of cultural industries.

This year’s theme, Ideas for the Revolution, brought together a diverse mix of artists, technologists, policymakers and representatives from cultural institutions to explore topics like cultural tourism, artificial intelligence, NFTs, the Metaverse and new models of exhibition design.

Western Australian Museum CEO Alec Coles welcomed attendees with a reflection on how cultural institutions can drive innovation and create meaningful connections between creative industries and communities.

The Museum’s Director of Engagement, Jason Fair, joined Briege Whitehead, Founder of White Spark Pictures, to discuss a new collaborative project, The Great Kimberley Wilderness. This 35-minute virtual reality documentary celebrates the Kimberley’s breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage through immersive storytelling. Briege shared insights into the creative process behind the film, wghile Jason discussed how projects like this are helping the Museum connect with new audiences.

REMIX Summit Perth also provided the ideal setting to officially launch The Great Kimberley Wilderness across four Museum sites: Boola Bardip, Museum of The Great Southern, Museum of the Goldfields and Museum of Geraldton. At Boola Bardip, attendees experienced the documentary in a newly developed temporary gallery space, featuring a 60-seat VR cinema and large-scale digital projections, offering an entirely new way to explore one of Australia’s most extraordinary regions.

The partnership between WA Museum and White Spark Pictures is a model of how cultural institutions can support the creative industries. By working together through every stage of the project, from development to distribution, the collaboration has enabled the Museum to deliver high-quality local content while expanding its technical infrastructure and capabilities.

Throughout the day, delegates explored the Museum’s galleries and took part in thought-provoking sessions on the fast-moving intersection of creativity and technology. Discussions focused on how trends like immersive tech and virtual production are transforming audience experiences, reshaping creative content and redefining how it’s shared with the world.
