Evolution: Torres Strait Masks is an exhibition featuring 12 striking masks, objects, and related cultural materials to celebrate the rich history of mask making in the Torres Strait Islands (Zenadh Kes).

This fascinating exhibition opens at the WA Maritime Museum on Saturday 4 June.

Evolution: Torres Strait Masks explores the long-standing importance of ceremonial masks in Torres Strait culture, and how they influence contemporary art forms.

WA Maritime Museum Manager Gill Harrison said the exhibition will give visitors special insight into this deeply spiritual practice of mask-making – revived by eight proud contemporary artists and master craftsmen who want to share this ancient culture and connect visitors to their spiritual forefathers.

“The masks have been created by contemporary Torres Strait artists Andrew Passi, Eddie Nona, Vincent Babia, Kapua Gutchen Senior, Yessie Mosby, Alick Tipoti, Milton Savage and Seriat Young,” Ms Harrison said.

“The WA Maritime Museum is proud to present this exhibition and I encourage everyone to take this special opportunity to engage with the cultures of the Torres Strait region.”

Evolution: Torres Strait Masks is a travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia, developed in partnership with the Gab Titui Cultural Centre and assisted by the Australian Government's Visions of Australia program.

Evolution is free with Museum entry fees and will be on display at the WA Maritime Museum from Saturday 4 June until Sunday 21 August 2022.
