Of course, we believe the WA Maritime Museum in Walyalup / Fremantle is worthy of being nominated and potentially winning the coveted Tourist Attraction category but, here is a recap of the outstanding achievements of the WA Maritime Museum in the 2024 Financial Year. In March, the Museum not only hosted the JAMES CAMERON: CHALLENGING THE DEEP exhibition, but James Cameron himself came to Perth for the exhibition’s opening! To give as many West Australians the opportunity to engage in his visit, the Museum created a sold out event at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal, James Cameron: In Conversation, which is still available for streaming – view here. The Museum houses significant maritime objects that highlight Western Australia’s cultural, scientific, and sporting heritage, and one close to all our hearts is the America’s Cup winner, Australia II. To mark four decades since the mammoth win, in September 2023 the Museum not only developed the commemorative exhibition, Australia II: 40 Years On, it also hosted a weekend of celebrations for everyone to relive the victory that stopped a nation! 2023 also saw the remarkable refurbishment of the much-loved HMAS Ovens submarine, bringing the former Royal Australian Navy Oberon Class submarine to its former glory. Positioned on the historic No.1 Slipway adjacent to the WA Maritime Museum, volunteer ex-submariners provide visitors with memorable tours of the vessel that played a significant part in Australia’s naval heritage. If these highlights are not enough, the WA Maritime Museum was in the top 10 percent of attractions worldwide based on Tripadvisor Travellers Choice, for the second year in a row! What’s more, the WA Maritime Museum is proud to be at the heart of the Fremantle community, partnering with local organisations to bring value and engagement to people of all abilities, backgrounds and experiences including exhibition sensory sessions with Kiind and Auslan, developing multicultural events, and supporting local artists. We know the WA Maritime Museum is a great place to visit and makes a major contribution to the Fremantle and State tourism industry, now we want to be able to celebrate that with a nomination and potential win at the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce Business Awards with your help.
