    The Shaggy Spined Bee

    This bee belongs in the genus Leioproctus but has yet to be scientifically named and described. It has been given the common name "Shaggy Spined Bee".

    WA Museum research associate Dr Terry Houston has developed a factsheet on this unique bee [PDF 299kb], and a full text version of this document can be found below.

    New bee creates a buzz in Ravensthorpe

    A very unusual species of bee has been discovered during a recent field study trip to the Ravensthorpe region in the south of Western Australian.

    Western Australian Museum research associate Terry Houston said the bee has yet to be scientifically named and described and, in the interim, has been dubbed the 'Shaggy Spined Bee'.

    “I became aware of the existence of the species a few years ago after finding five specimens among material donated to the WA Museum by two private collectors,” Dr Houston said.

    Museum pops open a new gallery for local artists

    The Western Australian Museum – Albany’s new Creative Spaces pop up gallery will host its first installation from March 22 to 28, 2013. 

    Western Australian Museum - Albany regional manager Rachael Wilsher-Saa said the Museum’s pop up gallery is part of a world-wide movement towards renewing and revitalising empty or disused spaces for public art. 

    “We’re very excited to be able to offer local artists this space, previously used for storage, to share their works with the public,” Ms Wilsher-Saa said.

    Traversing Antarctica travels to Geraldton

    One hundred years ago the 1911 - 1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE), famously led by Sir Douglas Mawson, spent many cold months exploring the enigmatic and deadly continent of Antarctica.

    From March 16 to May 26, 2013, a rare collection of artefacts from the expedition will be on display at the Western Australian Museum - Geraldton as part of Traversing Antarctica: the Australian experience, a national travelling exhibition celebrating Australia’s connection with the icy continent.

    Last days to experience Traversing Antartica

    Just ten days remain to see the awe-inspiring Traversing Antarctica: The Australian Experience exhibition at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle before it closes on Sunday, February 24.

    The exhibition showcases original equipment and diaries used by expeditioners during the infamous first Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911-1914, and follows Australia’s relationship with the icy-continent to modern day.

    New manager for WA Museum - Geraldton

    The Western Australian Museum – Geraldton will welcome new regional manager Leigh O’Brien this week as Catherine Belcher takes maternity leave from Friday, 1 February.

    Leigh, a curator from the WA Museum’s history department, has been with the Museum since 2006 and will take over the role as Geraldton’s regional manager for the next 12 months.

    “Geraldton and the wider Mid West is such a vibrant, constantly changing community and it is wonderful that the Museum is very much connected to its community,” Ms O’Brien said.

    Max Dupain on Assignment to Kalgoorlie

    The iconic images of one of Australia's most renowned photographers, Max Dupain, will be exhibited at the Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder from January 18.

    Dupain was famous for his modernist, documentary style of photography, and his images of post-World War II Australia are widely regarded as important records of a changing society.

    Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder regional manager Zoe Scott said his images offer a visual record of the ideology and culture of the 1940s to 1970s.

    A behind-the-scenes look at our insect collection

    The WA Museum Entomology dry collection includes pinned specimens and microscope slides of mainly Western Australian insect species. There are over 500000 pinned specimens and approximately 1000 microscope slides. Also included in the collection are approximately 800 holotypes (a single specimen expressly designated as the name-bearing “type” by the original author of the species).
