The Museum’s research departments – Terrestrial Zoology, Aquatic Zoology, Earth & Planetary Sciences, Anthropology & Archaeology, Maritime Archaeology, Maritime History and Social History – undertake consultancies and other paid work based on their research specialties. Included in our consultancy services, the museum performs wide range of taxonomic services for industry and environmental consultancies.

Within these departments, there is a wide range of specialised expertise that is sought by corporate and individual clients:
- Aquatic Zoology undertakes studies in crustaceans, molluscs, sponges and fishes, and performs comprehensive marine surveys.
- Terrestrial Zoology has specialised knowledge about spiders, stygo fauna, snakes, lizards, frogs, birds, mammals, numerous families of insects and in performing comprehensive ecological surveys.
- Earth and Planetary Sciences performs research in the fields of minerals, rocks, fossils, general geology and planetary materials.
- Anthropology and Archaeology possesses specialised knowledge in native title and Aboriginal heritage – although consultancies are not always possible if a conflict of interest persists.
- Maritime Archaeology possesses a large range of expertise related to maritime heritage, including educational services.
- Maritime history offers heritage assessment and advice.
- Social History performs heritage assessment and teaching services.
