Kalgoorlie-Boulder is Australia’s largest outback city and is located in Wongatha country. Kalgoorlie is named after ‘Karlkurla’ (pronounced gull-gurl-la), an edible ‘silky pear’ that grows throughout the arid interior of Western Australia.

At the time of the Referendum the subdivision of Kalgoorlie sat within a much a larger division that shared the same name. The larger division of Kalgoorlie stretched across the north west of Western Australia. It covered 90% of the state's land mass. Out of any electoral division in Australia, it recorded the highest 'No' vote at 29.04%.

The subdivision Kalgoorlie returned a high 'No' vote of 33.32%. It was the third highest 'No' vote from any subdivsion in WA.

In modern Kalgoorlie, communities are still divided. In August 2016 a peaceful protest after the death of a young Aboriginal boy escalated amid racial tensions.

The situation was diffused by Aboriginal elders from the community who worked alongside the state government. In response to this protest, the Kalgoorlie community called for stronger government action to address growing racial and social issues. Addressing these concerns, the government held a leadership summit to create an action plan for improved services and joint decision making.
