COMPASS, prismatic, ‘VERNER’S PATTERN VII’

Small, circular, brass with glass panels, ‘VERNER’S PATTERN VII’, compass in rounded, triangular shaped, fawn coloured, solid leather bag with long, thin, adjustable, buckled strap.
1. Fine, single stitched detail around each edge of compass bag, including at buckles of closing and hanging straps. Long, thin, belt-like hanging strap, with buckle at top, and adjusting holes down one side. Smaller, closing strap around apex of bag, secures compass inside bag. Inside of bag lined with dark brown felt, with single, light coloured stitching around outside edges. Leather strap well worn, small cracks visible through treated side, rougher underside slightly stained in places. Hard leather of bag slightly marked, with general wear visible.
2. Straight edged, round, raised viewing glass, with single, straight line engraved through centre, at top of compass. Brass casing, with ‘VERNER’S PATTERN VII’ engraving curved around bottom edge of top piece of compass. Compass face marked with a scale on the outer edge in black numbers, over iridescent metal, with a black centre and thick arrow-shaped, gold coloured bar needle. Face covered in glass panel. Hinged latch at front of compass (prop for top piece?), with circular bow attached to underneath. Scale engraved along outside edge of bottom piece, with small screw dials on right outer edge. Base plain, with slightly raised hollow, circular, copper coloured magnet? Glued to base. Glue residue around edges of raised circular piece. Engraving in centre reads ‘CRUCHON & EMONS/ LONDON/ No/ 1916/ ↑’.
