SATCHEL, school, ‘Shirley Freeden VIA’

[1] Small, stiff, structured, oblong, brown, linocut leather with perforations and imprinted internal border details, ‘Shirley Freeden VIA’ handwritten inside, children’s school satchel and loose strap. Rounded top flap, with decorative handle with round metal secures. Arrowhead finished ends of handle, with double layer of leather splitting. Bag leather linocut into lines all over, front has embossed, double lined border in centre, over both flap and front. Two short, wide, linocut leather straps from either side of scalloped bottom on flap, secured with two round metal secures at top of each strap, and three punched holes each, to pointed end. Three metal buckles, secured with leather and metal fastening. Two either side of front centre, line up with flap leather straps. Centre buckle strap missing from flap, perforations from stitching evident in centre of scalloped flap edge. Perforations of inside edge of both outer side buckles, for missing shoulder straps? Single line of thick rattan thread on each edge, securing solid side panels. Rounded base, with perforations on either side, from missing shoulder straps? Solid sides, oblong, with oval shaped top and bottom. Single line of rattan stitching on outer edge, with single cotton? stitching on inside edge. Reverse plain, except for perforated inverted triangle with two vertical lines through centre, from missing shoulder straps? Inside; unlined, with childlike, handwritten ‘Shirley Freeden/ VIA’. Metal ‘pin’ from external secures (handle and straps/buckles) visible. Sides lined with treated leather, similar to exterior material, without linocut decoration. Leather faded all over, from wear. Scratches all over. Straps worn and discoloured. Buckles tarnished and leather frayed and worn. Round metal secures tarnished. Dirty marks to edges, especially base and flap.
[2] Wide, short, leather strap from satchel (centre flap?). Perforated stitch marks at square end, five punched holes through centre to pointed end. Leather curled at pointed end, worn and wrinkled. Reverse plain, leather worn and discoloured from light brown to almost black.
