Eyelet missing, ribbed border, crown motif in top centre of top arm, ‘W’ in centre of field, ‘1914’ in bottom centre of bottom arm, all black text and motifs. Reverse: same border, colouring detail and crown motif placement. ‘FW’ directly under crown in centre of top arm. Centre of the field are 3 oak leaves, with two acorns at stem. ‘1813’ at bottom of bottom arm. Metal tarnished. Black colouring wearing thin on both crowns, front side crown showing signs of rust. Metal separating at top and bottom edges of top and bottom arms.
[2]Ribbon, black & white, small piece. Small, rectangular, black with white stripe down either side, ribbed textile, silk?, Iron Cross, Second Class, ‘1914’, ribbon. Part of larger piece of ribbon for hanging Iron Cross? Frayed top and bottom edges, uneven sides due to loom? manufacture. Some threads coming away from bottom frayed edge. White stripe down each side slightly discoloured/ yellowed.
[3]Ribbon, black & white, whole. Complete, oblong with square top edge and angled bottom edge, black with white stripe down either side, ribbed textile, silk?, Iron Cross, Second Class, ‘1914’, ribbon. Frayed at top edge, other edges slightly uneven due to loom? manufacture. Some threads coming away from top frayed edge. Permanent crease two-thirds of the way down ribbon. Less noticeable/permanent crease in top third of ribbon. White stripes slightly discoloured/yellowed.
[4] Ribbon, black & white, cut corner. Oblong, with cut top edge making it slightly angled, and angled bottom edge. Black and white stripe down either side, ribbed textile, silk?, Iron Cross, Second Class, ‘1914’, ribbon. Frayed at cut top edge, other edges slightly uneven due to loom? manufacture. Some threads coming away from top frayed edge. Permanent crease around halfway down ribbon, smaller crease near bottom edge and tip of bottom angle. Dirty marks/pulled dark threads in yellowed/discoloured white stripes.
[5]Certificate, Leo Freudenberg. Small, rectangular, cream coloured, paper, ‘Eiserne Kreuz II. Klasse’, certificate. Double zig-zag lined border, with an iron cross motif in each corner, text in field reads; ‘Seine Exzellenz der Herr kommandierende General/ hat im Namen/ Seiner Majestät des Kaisers und Königs/ dem …. Leo Freudenberg/ … das/ Eiserne Kreuz II. Klasse/ verliehen. ……’. Cursive handwriting largely indecipherable. Black ink signature in bottom left of certificate. Faded purple stamp in bottom centre, with central monarchical crest, with text border (indecipherable). Reverse plain. Certificate folded into quarters, slight tearing through vertical central fold, and top and bottom edges.
[6]Tin, base, tobacco, ‘ISLA-MOOS’, German. Small, round, flat, metal, ‘ISLA MOOS’, tobacco tin base. From top: silver-coloured inside, reflective surface inside, groove borders inside base edge. Convex groove near top of base, to fit lid. Underside: Scratched outer edge, silver colouring worn away. Green and gold maker’s label reads (from top); ‘ENGELHARDS/ISLӒNDISCH MOOS . PASTILLEN/ISLA MOOS/GES. GESCH./ WAREN-ZEICHEN/Altbewährt/ bei Husten u. Heiserkeit’, bordere d by green and gold concentric border. ‘ISLA‘ and ‘MOOS’, ‘GES.’ and ‘GESCH.’, and ‘WAREN-‘ and ‘ZEICHEN’, each separated by large, stylised tobacco leaf/stem in centre field of label. Tin scratched and worn.
