Small, cylindrical, bright red, metal, ‘WATKINS/ PETRO-CARBO/ SALVE’, tin. Weight of tin indicates ointment inside (unable to open). Rounded lip on top of tin, with slightly sunken gold and brown painted label. Text reads; ‘2 7/8 OUNCES/ NEW WEIGHT/ WATKINS/ PETRO-CARBO/ SALVE/ PHENOL 11 GAINS PER OUNCE/ MADE IN AUSTRALIA/ THE J.R. WATKINS CO./ MELBOURNE, ADELAIDE, SYDNEY/ PERTH, BRISBANE’. Sunken area rimmed in gold, with gold text for maker’s name/label and brown highlight. Base of tin reads; ‘WATKINS/ PETRO-CARBO SALVE/ A SOOTHING AND HELPFUL/ DRESSING OF MANY USES./ FOR SUPERFICIAL VARIETIES OF/ SIMPLE OPEN SORES, BURNS, CHAPS,/ CHAFES, BRUISES, CHILBLAINS, ECZEMA,/ SUNBURN, NETTLE RASH AND NON-TOXIC/ INSECT BITES. USEFUL TO KEEP FOREIGN/ MATTER OUT OF COMMON OPEN BOILS AND/ PIMPLES. Paint worn on raised edges and where lid and base meet, scratches all over tin. Slight rusting apparent over raised rim of lid. Some dirty marks over tin (ointment residue?)
