UNIFORM, Arnott, Mills & Ware

H1992.421

Light green, short-sleeved uniform which has concealed front buttoning. Style is straight, slightly flared, with two back pleats from a yoke and two front pockets. Worn with H92/0422. At neck has manufacturer's label "IMAGE APPAREL / BY / ENSIGN / MADE IN AUSTRALIA / 12". A white label has been affixed above this which is overlaid by a pink one reading "ARNOT MILLS / C.O.G. / A/C 82". Worn with H92/0422 and H92/0424. Worn by Alvia Dimascio while a chief supervisor at Arnott, Mills & Ware. Alvia commenced work with the company in 1955 after attending South Fremantle Primary School. One of her first jobs was in the creaming room (for some years). In 1992, Alvia was interviewed by Stuart Reid and described much about work on the factory floor at Arnott, Mills & Ware. Included was the bonus system, the processes of creaming, discipline in the 1950s, wrapping and cellophaning, the union and closure of the factory. At closure of the factory, the chief supervisor wore a green uniform, the Foreladies watermelon pink in the same design and Leading Hands maroon.
