Four envelopes issued by Austalia Post to mark the centenary of the discovery of gold at Coolgardie in 1892.
[.a] Has a design all over the front of pressed tin in a pale cream on white background. The top left hand corner features a reproduction of a painting believed to be the mine at Kanowa, NE of Kalgoorlie. The 'stamp' features a picture of a head frame with 'AUSTRALIA' and '45c' underneath.
[.b] Overall design is of weatherboard with chipped and faded blue paint against a white background. The main illustration is a photograph of Coolgardie and the 'stamp' is a portrait photograph of Arthur Bayley who registered the first claim at Coolgardie.
[.c] Has a background of standstone brick faded against a white background. In the top left hand corner the illustration is a reproduction of a Fred Williams' sketch of a water selling depot. The 'stamp' is a picture of a miner operating a dryblower.
[.d] Has a background of vertical sheets of corrugated iron in faded blue and rust colours on a white background. The picture in the top left hand corner is of the Lake View Mine showing miners underground. The 'stamp' is a picture of Paddy Hannan.
The main illustrations on all the envelopes are bordered in gold and have 'DESERT GOLD' printed underneath them. Most of the illustrations have been supplied by the Battye Library, the Western Australian section of the State Library in Perth. The flap on the back of the envelopes is overprinted with the logo and address of the museum of the Goldfields in Kalggorlie which has these envelopes for sale in it's shop.
