INSTRUCTIONS, Care of Tutill's Trade Union banners

H1989.747

Reads; "Directions / for the / Proper Keeping / and / Preservation / of TUTILL'S / Patent / Pure English Silk / Banners. / GEORGE TUTILL'S Artistic Banner Manufactory / 83, CITY ROAD, LONDON, E.C. / Roll the banner up carefully and smoothly, but not tightly, and place it in the case which should be stood upright upon one end. On no account must the banner be left lying down or be kept in a heated Clubroom, but in a cool dry place. Paper is placed in a new banner as a precaution against sticking whilst travelling to its destinations, and it will fall out when the banner is unrolled; should it however adhere to the painting, can easily be removed by damping with a little warm water, and using a soft handkerchief. Nothing does more harm than rain; you are therefore strongly advised not to expose your banner to bad weather, but should it get wet, do not roll it up until it is perfectly dry. Calico or linen sheets are not necessary, and if used, will be sure to damage the banner unless rolled in very evenly and smoothly. The strings at the bottom corners of the banner should always be held by careful persons, when the banner is being carried in a procession. When the wind is strong the banner should be allowed to rise, but ought to be kept straight, and not allowed to flap. The strings are not intended to gold the banner forcibly down, and neither must the strings be tied up, or the banner will be entirely at the mercy of the wind. GEORGE TUTILL'S banners are the strongest that are made, but great care is necessary to avoid damage in stormy weather."
