ENGINE INDICATOR

H1989.1087

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. The instrument is attached to a running engine, measures and plots a graph of the engine's horsepower to ascertain whether the engine is running efficiently. The instrument is attached to a panel in the box which fold out, providing a base for the instrument. The box contains spare springs, paper, string and measuring rulers. Different springs are used according to the specific pounds of vacuum and pounds of press. There is also a card with markings to read the indicator's graphs, with instructions. Concealed in the inner lid is a chamber with the instruments specifications and a table of springs required for specific pounds of press and vacuum. The specifications read: "THE 'MCINNES-DOBBIE' / PATENT STEAM ENGINE INDICATOR / (This is the latest / improved / pattern / of the MCINNES indicator) / LARGE SIZE INSTRUMENT / For Speeds to 250 Revolutions per Minute". The spring table reads "The pressures above are calculated to give a vertical pencil travel of 2 1/4 inches / SOLE MAKERS / DOBBIE MCINNES LTD; / (T.S. MCINNES & CO, Ltd, and ALEX DOBBIE & SON, Ltd, Amalgamated)". Instrument appears to have been made during a transition period of the amalgamation of the two companies.
