WAR SERVICE MEDAL & CAMPAIGN STARS

Two War Service Medals and three Campaign Stars with ribbons attached to a metal bar pin (a) Australian Service Medal instituted in 1949 for those who served for 18 months or more in WW II. It is circular white metal - obverse bears the head of King George, the reverse bears the Australian coat-of-arms with the words "AUSTRALIAN SERVICE MEDAL 1939-1945". The ribbon is striped in dark blue (Navy), khaki (Army), pale blue (Air Force) and red (Mercantile Navy). Engraved around rim "P.M. 3724 W.J.McNAMARA". (b) War Medal awarded to full-time personnel of the armed forces of the Commonwealth for 28 days' service in WW II. Identical to (a) except the reverse has a lion on it & "1939/1945". Ribbon has red, white & blue stripes. (c) Pacific Star awarded for operational service in the Pacific from 8/12/1941. Six-pointed star in gold-coloured metal with the Royal & Imperial cypher in the centre, surmounted by a crown. The cypher is surrounded by a circlet bearing the words "THE PACIFIC STAR". Ribbon is red, light & dark blue, green & yellow. (d) Atlantic Star commemorates the Battle of the Atlantic - identical to (c) except the circlet bears the words "THE ATLANTIC STAR". Ribbon is blue white & green. (e) The 1939-45 Star, granted for service in operations from 3/9/1939 to 15/8/1945. Identical to (c) except the circlet bears the words "THE 1939 - 1945 STAR". Ribbon is dark blue, red & light blue.
