DRESS, c. 1905 (Bodice & Skirt)

CH1985.228

Dress of mauve-pink silk printed with white daisies, possibly originally of the 1890s, re-modelled c. 1905.
a) Bodice: heavily boned (11 bones) 1890s style, front opening with hooks and eyes; stand up collar trimmed at front with coffee-coloured cutwork lace; long sleeves with bishop effect puffs attached to straight forearm, which is covered with same cutwork; frill of lace at wrist; front has been enlarged by inserting extra flap of white cotton and disguising it with a gathered panel of printed silk.
b) Skirt: straight front, light shirring around waist from hips to back; flowing train at back; front placket on left; hem trimmed with Mechlin-style lace.
c) Pettiocoat: pink cotton; placket at centre back; hem trimmed with frill of daisy printed silk; internal of stiffening and torchon lace. Hand and machine sewn. Probably belonged to Emily Prinsep (1875-1960) and re-modelled for someone larger.
