CLAVICHORD, Eileen Joyce

Made for Eileen Joyce, and used by her, by Thomas Robert Charles Goff. Adam style case, painted pale green ground, gilt edges Hinged lid painted darker green banded lines and decorated in dark green, white and gilt with a stag's head to centre. Two cherubs, one with a bow, the other with a horn, crossed arrows at each end with horns and ribbon bows, leaves and drapes. Foliate and scroll pierced brass hinges. Interior of lid painted with a scene signed and dated "Roland Pym. 1950" - Diana bathing in a river with attendant females. Acteon with stag's head looking on. Grey painted border, decorated in gilt. Above keyboard: "T.R.C.G. ET J.C.C. FECERUNT MCML". Box recess at left side with loose cover contains tuning key. Fold-down section allows access to keyboard. Major keys in black, minor in white. The clavichord was the fist string instrument with a keyboard. Double strings, crossing a single bridge. The strings struck by brass pins. Four octaves plus one. Lowest note two octaves removed from middle "C"; highest note "D" two octaves above middle "C". Stand: also painted pale green, square legs. Painted with ribbon bows and drapes in white. Eileen Joyce, 1912 to 1991, born Zeehan, Tasmania, first piano studies St Joseph's Convent, Boulder. Studied in Leipzig and London. CMG 1981.
