Heritage investigations for New Museum site

Archaeologists from Earth Imprints were on site at the Museum last week taking soil samples and undertaking metal detection as part of the heritage investigations for the New Museum project.

The heritage works form part of the initial investigations to the site to determine where the boundaries of our existing heritage buildings are located.

On International Museum Day, 18 May 2012, the Minister for Culture and the Arts John Day, MLA and Treasurer Christian Porter, MLA came to the Museum to announce the State Government's funding commitment for a new museum for WA.
This is a fantastic outcome for the WA Museum and the State.

The grounds of the WA Museum - Perth has been transformed and the Perth International Arts Festival have well and truly settled in. Already bands such as Death Cab for Cutie, Little Roy and The Suitcase Royale have entertained Perth audiences against the glorious backdrop of the Museum's historic buildings.

The site of the Francis Street building is now looking more like a backyard blitz as our contractors Environmental Industries prepare the site for landscaping.

Into the basement

The demolition of Francis Street is nearly complete with the last basement floor currently being demolished and the final backfilling underway.

The site will be landscaped throughout December and January with trees and seating which can be used by visitors and the public while we prepare for a new museum.

With the all the above ground structure gone, work has turned to demolishing the two basement levels - starting with the roof and walls of the upper Basement level.

Things are moving very fast now...the pictures below were taken on 30 August and almost the next day, all the floor of Level 1 was gone!

The Level 3 floor/Level 2 roof is now gone and jackhammering of the Level 2 structures continues.
It's noisy work but is moving along quite quickly now.
Now less than half the original height.

Goodbye Levels 3 and 4

In late June and early July work continued to remove the fourth floor of the building.
As we approach the end of July, the third floor is being demolished.

Moving onto the Fifth floor

The demolition works continue - the rooms on the roof top of the building have now gone.
Following the removal of asbestos contaminated materials under stringent health and safety procedures throughout Level 5, the structural demolition of this floor has now started.
The panels around the outside of this floor are being taken down now as you can see in the images below.

Work has started to demolish the roof top structures including the rooms where the air-conditioning and lift machinery were located.
The building will be demolished floor by floor. While this roof work is taking place, internal demolition work continues on the lower floors.

Scaffolding nearing completion

The scaffolding around the building is largely complete. The screen around the scafffolding has been installed to contain dust generated during the works.

Link bridge dismantled

This morning the bridge that linked the Francis Street Building to the Museum's Beaufort Street building was taken down. In the past, visitors could walk from the displays in one building to the other without having to go outside. Since the Francis Street building closed in 2003, the bridge has not been in use.

The hoardings are up and bright blue scaffolding is starting to take shape around the Francis Street Building.
The scaffolding will frame the protective dust-proof canopy around the building which needs to be in place before internal demolition work commences.

Preparing the site

The demolition contractors, Delta Group, have started preparing the site. The first thing they need to do is put up barrier fence, called a hoarding, around the site.
To decorate the hoarding and provide important information about the project, the Museum designed some colourful graphics. These pictures show the start of the installation of these hoarding graphics along the Francis Street edge of the site today by Spice Digital Imaging.

We are just finalising all the work we need to do before the demolition contractors, Delta Group, take over the site and prepare to start work in March 2011.
Moving Megamouth

In September 2010, as the first moves in the demolition of the Francis Street building, the iconic Megamouth shark was moved to the Western Australian Museum — Maritime.
