If Australians can understand these stories as the mighty stones on which their nation could rest, I believe we could then combat the forces of racism, of hate, of fear, that are presently destroying other nations. But for these things to happen the truth must be heard. Black and white, we have become kin.

- Richard Flanagan

There is much in the history of Western Australia, from settlement in the late 1820’s to the present, and in particular our relationship with the first peoples of this state, that is unknown.

How do we come to terms with the truth of the often brutal, difficult history of how Western Australia came to be? How do we encourage truth telling in a way that contributes to increased awareness about our past and to reconciliation, so that we may all live like kin?

In this case study session we hear from Dr Chris Owen, the Battye Librarian at the State Library of Western Australia and Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia about his Darkest West Australia Facebook project and research into our Aboriginal history, and Jim Morrison, Goreng Noongar elder, activist and advocate, who works passionately to address the rights of the Stolen Generations.

This session is part of In Visible Ink: Beyond Story. Ticketing is available from the Beyond Story homepage.
