Beyond Story: Masterclass Three

On Responsibility

The world is being undone before us. History is moving to fragmentation on the basis of concocted differences, toward the destruction of democracy using not coups and guns to entrench autocracies and dictators, but the ballot box and social media. The bonfire of our vanities is fully loaded with the fuel of growing inequality, fear, and division.

- Richard Flanagan

If the cultural sector can inspire a more nuanced consideration of our multiple histories, how do we ensure that change occurs and that we have the resources to fight the fires of ‘inequality, fear and division’?

What is our role as audiences, as museum visitors: what is our collective responsibility to alter our gaze, to see the unseen and to translate information into action? How do we connect with people beyond traditional networks and filter bubbles? How do civic institutions encourage meaningful dialogue and foster cohesion in a way that promotes hope and meaningful reconciliation?

In this masterclass we will hear from a panel of commentators on these issues, discuss how we harness our collective strengths in the interests of a just and inclusive national conversation and how we build the Museum of Freedom and Tolerance to amplify and reflect our common humanity.

This session will be chaired by International Human Rights Lawyer and author Rabia Siddique, and feature keynotes and a panel discussion with behavioural scientist and entrepreneur Patrycja Slawuta, an expert in genocide, collective memory and reconciliation, Grace Forrest, founder of the Walk Free Foundation, human rights activist Hannah McGlade, and founder of the Museum of Freedom and Tolerance, Adam Levin.

This session is part of In Visible Ink: Beyond Story. Ticketing is available from the Beyond Story homepage.
