In partnership with the Fenians, Fremantle & Freedom Festival, the WA Maritime Museum is proud to support and present children’s activities during the school holidays.

  • Take the Shamrock Trail to discover the tale of 2 famous Irishmen!
  • What would it be like to be at sea in a sailing ship in the 1860’s? Get the inside story from some of the Museum exhibits!
  • Build a model boat, and be sure to test it!

Remarkable Rome

Join us for a celebration of all things from ancient Rome, as we dig into this world to uncover the story behind the exhibition Escape from Pompeii: the untold Roman rescue.

Explore our Roman military uniform touch-table as well as our In Fashion toga draping and Roman ladies’ costume demonstration.

Decorate your own paper-craft centurion helmet to take home, or craft a colourful mosaic frame or picture. You can also decorate a Roman battleship and watch it sail across our digitally animated screen!


The Grey Company: Gladiator School

Want to become a gladiator? Are you keen to risk your life for the opportunity of glory in the combat arena? Join the Grey Company for an insight into the training and techniques you would need to survive the competition in one of ancient Rome’s favourite entertainments, the gladiator games!

The Grey Company specialises in historical combat and re-enactment, and is bringing its live action demonstrations to the WA Maritime Museum once again to showcase the martial arts of the gladiator.

Cheer for your favourite champion as they battle their challengers!

Develop your engineering and construction skills with our ancient Roman naval ballista workshop! This crossbow of the high seas was built to sling missiles at enemy ships. Join us in making your own miniature ballista to take home and have fun with our test-firing challenges.

Note: This workshop requires construction skills, techniques and equipment that are not suitable for younger children.


STEAMSub: Marvellous Mosaics

Dates: 12 January & 19 January

Develop your artistic side with us in this STEAMSub workshop as you make your own Venetian glass mirror mosaic. Learn how to create your artwork with some of the materials and techniques that ancient Romans developed.

From an archaeological point of view, mosaics are a priceless record of everyday life in ancient Rome – what people valued, what they wore, what they ate, what tools and weapons they used, even information about flora and fauna. Roman mosaics are more than just art – they are a valuable archaeological source.

Note: This workshop requires construction skills, techniques and equipment that are not suitable for younger children. Please wear clothing that is suitable for messy artwork. All materials will be supplied.

Join one of Recfishwest’s popular and free SunSmart fishing clinics at the WA Maritime Museum.

Participants will learn how to be SunSmart while learning some fishing basics like casting and fish handling, as well as how to fish sustainably and look after their fishing environment.

Fishing rods, sunscreen, bait and equipment will be supplied.

*All participants must wear a hat and be directly supervised by a parent or guardian for the duration of the clinic.
