How much do you know about sand? Did you know glass is made from it? That it can sing, and is home to an amazing array of creatures?

Discover more extraordinary, science about this ordinary substance, and create your own fun and sandy arts and crafts in our Discovery Centre these Christmas holidays.

Dig deep and bury yourself in the secretive, shifting world of sand.

DISCOVERY CENTRE

Cost: Mini mandala $5, sand art bottle $3, stain glass art $2.50, paint a plaster free to $3

Explore the science of sand and find out what it is made of. Discover strange and secret sand dwellers from cartwheeling spiders to the stately camel.

Try your hand at the ancient Buddhist art of sand mandalas or meditate on the wonder of the Japanese Zen garden or layer vibrantly coloured grains in a glass bottle to create stunning sand art. Help us construct a giant city of sand with sand coated building blocks.

Get artistic with light and sand in our lightbox studio, or let your imagination go with kinetic sand play.

SUCCULENT SAND GARDEN

Dates: 10.30am – 11.30am Tuesday 5, 12 & 19 January 2016 Cost: $7

Join a guided activity in our Discovery Centre to create a terrarium for cacti using sand and pebbles. Decorate your own stunning succulent garden with stones, shells and other ornaments.

ZEN GARDEN

Dates: 10.30am – 11.30am Wednesday 6, 13 & 20 January 2016

Cost: $7

Age: 7 – 12

Bookings: essential

In a guided activity, design and craft a Japanese inspired “dry” water feature using sand, stones and other decorations. Construct a mini rake and then form tranquil ripples in the sand to represent water.

SANDSTONE ART

Dates: 10.30am – 11.30am Thursday 7, 14 & 21 January 2016

Cost: $5

Age: 5 – 12

Bookings: essential

In a guided activity, create a nifty sandstone-like wall-hanging or garden ornament using sand as a mould for your plaster filling. Decorate with gems, stones and other objects.
